VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, August 31, 2011 - Sodexo Canada continues to make strides in the realm of sustainability and corporate citizenship and today announces the launch of several initiatives at Vancouver Coastal Health UBC Hospital as a part of the Better Tomorrow Plan, Sodexo's formal roadmap to sustainability.

These initiatives align with the Vancouver Coastal Health vision of becoming a leader in sustainability and include a comprehensive composting program, introduction of reusable china and cutlery, conversion to fully compostable take-away coffee cups and containers, sustainable napkin program and a heightened focus on buying local, organic and sustainable foods.

“This is an important step as we continue on our sustainability journey; each initiative that we launch at each of our client locations helps us reduce our footprint,” said Barry Telford. “The Better Tomorrow Plan is unique among sustainability plans as it is comprised of measureable key performance indicators and milestones that we've established. We appreciate and count on the active support and participation of our clients that have embraced the Better Tomorrow Plan with us.”

The Vancouver Coastal UBC Hospital site is also the first Starbucks in British Columbia serving coffee in the Starbucks compostable cup and the first Sodexo Canada site to implement the company's 'Choose to Reuse' program.

At the core of The Better Tomorrow Plan are 14 commitments that will be implemented across the company with clear metrics to track the progress of Sodexo's work to:

  • Protect and restore the environment
  • Support local community development
  • Promote health and wellness

Sodexo touches the lives of more than 50 million people daily at 34,000 locations around the world. This enormous reach comes with a significant responsibility to ensure that our actions help improve the quality of daily life and guarantee a more sustainable future for the planet.
